DEVELOPING A VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT ON INDONESIAN VERSION OF REALISTIC MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study is to develop a virtual learning environment (VLE) on realistic mathematics education in secondary school to assist and support the improvement of students mathematical modeling abilities. The Indonesian version of realistic mathematics education approach, labeled as PMRI in Indonesia, encourages students to study collaboratively through participation, build reasoning, and practice individual mathematical modeling skills. The virtual learning environment provides a media, informal and easy communication between teachers and students, and learning materials that can stimulate students interest in learning mathematics. The result of this study shows a significantly higher achievement in mathematical modeling ability in a student group of PMRI approach via VLE compared to a group of students in a normal classroom. This paper also shows some examples of students work relate to students mathematical modeling abilities via a virtual learning environment.
