IMPROVING THE STUDENTSí ABILITY AT WRITING
DESCRIPTIVE TEXT BY USING GROUP INVESTIGATION

ABSTRACT

This study attempted to improve studentsí ability at descriptive text writing by using group investigation strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class X-IPS MAN Binjai which consisted of 38 students. This research was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of three meetings and cycle II consisted of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing test ,observation sheet. Questionnaire sheet , and interview report, it was found that teaching-learning process run well. Students were active, enthusiastic and interest in writing. The result of the research showed that Group Investigation Strategy significantly improved studentsí ability at descriptive writing. . The mean of the post test of first cycle is 70,33 and the mean of post test at the second cycle is 91,66. The percentage of students who get the score of 75 increased. In post test I at the first cycle, the students who get score 75 are 20 students out of 38 students (60%). In the post test of the second cycle, the students who get the standard score of 75 are 32 out of 38. It is 95% of the students. The improvement is about 35%. Therefore, this study concludes that the implementation of group investigation strategy is effective.
